Institute of Cancer Research
New Renovated CAT B London HQ
The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) project epitomizes a fusion of innovative design concepts and functional enhancements tailored to meet the diverse needs of its occupants. From the welcoming reception area to the versatile breakout spaces, each design element contributes to a cohesive and dynamic workspace environment.
The beginning of this transformative project traces back to our Business Development’s initial contact with ICR through telemarketing. Subsequent discussions, both virtual and on-site visits to witness the ongoing construction of the Maggie’s at the Royal Marsden Hospital, laid the groundwork for a collaborative partnership. Impressed by the design ethos and functional space of the Maggie’s facility, ICR expressed a desire to emulate its success in their own workspace.

An opportunity arose for Habit Action to pitch for the design and construction of ICR’s 123 Old Brompton site. Leveraging the Maggie’s at the Royal Marsden Hospital case study, the design team did a great job emphasizing space optimization and adherence to ICR’s unique requirements. Despite facing stiff competition from seven other design and build companies, extensive rehearsals and meticulous preparation bolstered our pitch.
One of the primary challenges revolved around space planning and maximizing natural light within the existing structure. Furthermore, ensuring Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance posed a significant hurdle due to the absence of step-free access from the street. To address these challenges, innovative solutions such as the installation of a platform lift and strategic placement of double-glazed windows were implemented. Additionally, navigating diverse stakeholder perspectives necessitated adept project management, skilfully managed by the design team, to ensure alignment with ICR’s vision.
A cornerstone of the project was its commitment to sustainability. By incorporating energy-efficient features such as double-glazed windows and sourcing materials from sustainable suppliers, Habit Action facilitated ICR's transition towards a greener workspace. These efforts not only reduced environmental impact but also contributed to long-term cost savings.
At the heart of the ICR facility lies the meticulously crafted reception area, serving as a gateway to the institution's ethos and mission. A custom-made reception desk, adorned with brand screens showcasing ICR’s groundbreaking research, greets visitors with an immersive introduction to the institute's endeavours. Flexible seating arrangements and acoustic booths facilitate both formal meetings and casual interactions, fostering collaboration and engagement.
Biophilic design principles permeate throughout the workspace, creating a harmonious connection between the built environment and nature. Living walls, strategically integrated into the design, not only enhance aesthetics but also promote well-being and productivity. These green installations serve as focal points, instilling a sense of calmness and rejuvenation amidst the bustling atmosphere.
Adjacent to the reception area, the cafe and coffee space offer a vibrant hub for social interactions and informal meetings. Equipped with modern amenities, including a barrister-style coffee machine and vending machines, this area encourages spontaneous gatherings and networking opportunities. The strategic placement ensures easy access for both employees and visitors, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
Throughout the building, strategically placed breakout areas provide flexible spaces for collaboration, innovation, and relaxation. Lounge areas scattered amidst biophilic elements offer inviting spots for impromptu discussions and brainstorming sessions. These informal meeting spaces encourage cross-team interactions, facilitating idea exchange and fostering a culture of innovation.
The training rooms at ICR serve as versatile facilities for educational sessions, workshops, and conferences. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including large interactive screens and microphones, these rooms offer dynamic environments for impactful presentations and knowledge exchange. Biophilic elements integrated into the design enhance the learning experience, creating a refreshing ambiance conducive to focused discussions and skill development.
Efficient space planning ensures seamless flow and accessibility throughout the building. From the reception area to the training rooms and restroom facilities, every aspect of the layout is meticulously designed to optimize usability and convenience. Accessible features, such as gender-neutral toilets and disabled toilet facilities, underscore ICR’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
In essence, the design features of the ICR workspace epitomize a holistic approach to workplace enhancement, seamlessly blending aesthetics with functionality. Through thoughtful integration of biophilic elements, versatile breakout spaces, and state-of-the-art facilities, Habit Action has succeeded in creating an environment that inspires collaboration, fosters innovation, and promotes well-being among ICR’s community of researchers, students, and visitors.
We’re proud to have been involved in such a journey from the start.
